Examples of Emergencies
Examples of emergencies may include, but are not limited to:
- Chest pain, shortness of breath, or symptoms of a possible heart attack or stroke.
- Severe allergic reaction, trouble breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat.
- Severe pain, severe bleeding, major injury, loss of consciousness, seizure, or sudden confusion.
- Suicidal thoughts, thoughts of self-harm, thoughts of harming someone else, or a mental health crisis.
- Poisoning, overdose, or suspected toxic exposure.
- Any condition that feels serious, rapidly worsening, or potentially life-threatening.
For mental health, substance use, or suicidal crisis support, call or text 988.
If there is immediate danger, risk of harm, or a life-threatening emergency, call 911 first.
For poisoning or suspected toxic exposure, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222. If the person has collapsed, has trouble breathing, has a seizure, or cannot be awakened, call 911 immediately.
